Twenty-four years after toddler Carys Howell goes missing in Wales, Matilda Grey's mother Janice commits suicide in front of her. Finding a box of clippings about Carys's disappearance, Matilda travels to the village of Penllynith, hoping to get to the bottom of the mysteries of the missing child and her mother's suicide. But the locals hostile, except Australian Nick Dean, who has inherited a mansion nearby, and dark forces are stirring.
