Based at the University of Melbourne, the Union Theatre was refurbished in the 1930s. Prior to this, the space seated 500 people but lacked tiered seating, adequate lighting, and backstage storage. It was remodelled under the auspices of Sir Raymond Priestley (Vice-Chancellor, 1935-1938) and theatre manager Des Connor, previously manager at the Garrick Theatre. Following the refurbishment, student productions that had previously been staged in city theatres returned to campus, beginning in 1938.
