About the poem:

This poem was inspired by a trip on the Hotham Valley Railway historic steam train at Dwellingup. My family has three generations association with railway work. At Dwellingup, old workers’ cottages along the railway line made me remember a trip I had as a young child to my father’s home town of Port Augusta, and being at the bottom of my cousins garden as we watched trains being shunted, or leaving to cross the Nullarbor, one of which was driven by an uncle. Since the poem was written my father has passed away from dementia, and I have inherited all his old photographs of trains.
