This column reports on the campaign to recognise the wattle as Australia's floral emblem and makes the point that the campaign was initiated by a migrant, Maria Hitchcock (née Celovic), whose father was Croatian and mother Rumanian. She was born in Austria and came to Australia with her parents when she was eight years old.
