BiographyHistory

The Citizen was a American newspaper, based in New York City, founded by Irish nationalist and former convict John Mitchel in 1853. The first issue was released in January, 1854 and the paper would come to be known for its strong views on Irish nationalism, Catholicism and its support of Southern slavery. Mitchel would remain as editor until February 1854, when he left to found another newspaper, the Southern Citizen. Upon his departure, the Citizen was handed over to Mitchel's associate John McClenahan.
