BiographyHistory

Jeffares studied Classics at Trinity College, Dublin and took up his first lectureship there in 1943-1944. He also taught at Oxford, in the Netherlands, and at Edinburgh before taking up a position in Adelaide. Jeffares returned to the United Kingdom in 1956 to become Chair of English at Leeds University.

Jeffares was one of the inaugurators of post-colonial criticism. He pioneered Commonwealth studies while teaching at Leeds University.
