BiographyHistory

Baldwin was one of the most significant African-American writers of the twentieth century. His novels explore both sexual identity and racism, and his sharp essays were highly influential in the US civil rights struggle at home and internationally. His best-selling 1962 novel Another Country was banned as obscene in Australia in the first half of the 1960s, attracting accusations of racism against Customs and the Literature Censorship Board.
