BiographyHistory

Kitty Napangardi lived most of her life in the Lander River area in the Northern Territory and grew up on the Willowra station. She began riding horses and learning about stock work as a young girl. Napangardi was later recruited as a horsetailer and stock worker for the station owner, Wickham, in the Lander River area. Although the Commonwealth Ordinance of 1911 made it illegal for Indigenous women to wear men's clothing in the company of white people, Napangardi regularly wore stockmen's clothes. She crossed Warlpiri gender lines by hunting kangaroos.
