BiographyHistory

Born in a river bed under the totem of the taipan snake, Tommy George is a Kuku Thaypan Elder. Known by his language name of Awu Laya, he has been  a curator of Quinkan Country outside Laura, home to some of the world's earliest rock art.

Tommy George has a traditional name, Woongarnum which means to break or crack a bone. In 2009 he was the sole surviving fluent speaker of his language, Kuku Thaypan, one of four Aboriginal languages spoken in Quinkan country on Cape York.
