BiographyHistory

Clarence Manning was the son of Henry John Manning (q.v.) and grandson of William Joseph Manning (q.v.), both prominent figures in the Queensland provincial newspaper industry. Manning served as a Lieutenant with the Australian infantry during World War II. From 27 August 1949, he was editor of The Daily Mercury in Mackay, and subsequently was managing editor and chairman of directors from April 1968 to 31 December 1980. In 1981 he moved to Brisbane to serve as executive chairman of Provincial Newspapers (Qld) Ltd. Manning was awarded an OBE.
