Anh Do is the son of Vietnamese refugees. In 1980, at the age of two, he arrived in Australia with his family by boat. Anh Do grew up in the Sydney suburb of Cabramatta. He has worked as a writer, actor, artist, film producer and stand-up comedian as well as with Anderson Consulting.

His first published book The Happiest Refugee : The Extraordinary True Story of a Boy's Journey from Starvation at Sea to Becoming One of Australia's Best-Loved Comedians is an autobiographical account of his family's arrival in Australia. This book won six awards including the Australian Book Industry Award Australian Book of the Year, and the Indie Awards Book of the Year. The Happiest Refugee was also adapted into a play.

In 2014, he was a finalist for The Archibald prize, and in 2015 he began the ABC TV program, Ahn's Brush with Fame, in which he paints well-known Australian personalities while discussing their life's story.

Anh has written over 30 children's books, many which have been nominated for, or won awards, including the WeirDo series, Ninja Kid, and Into the Wild

Anh Do is also the brother of playwright and filmmaker Khoa Do.
