BiographyHistory

'Yothu Yindi are a Yolngu band from the north-east coast of Australia's Northern Territory, a country the Yolngu have occupied and protected for perhaps 40,000 years or more. The Yolngu members of the band celebrate their deep spiritual connections with the land, connections that are kept alive through song and dance and ceremony, public aspects of which are found within the band's recordings and live performances.'

Yothu Yindi's song 'Treaty' was created as a protest against the Hawke Government's failure to deliver on its 1988 promise to conclude a treaty with Aboriginal people by 1990. 'Treaty' became the first song in the Yolgnu language to enter the pop charts. In August 2009, 'Treaty' became part of the collection of the National Film and Sound Archive's Sounds of Australia: The National Registry of Recorded Sound.
