A murder mystery set in Cobar, New South Wales, in the mid-nineteenth century.

It aired first in the UK as part of anthology series ITV Play of the Week, then in the US as part of anthology series The United States Steel Hour, then in Australia as part of anthology series General Motors Hour.

A contemporary review offers the following detailed synopsis:

'The story starts when one of the young men of the town of Cobar, western New South Wales, is found battered to death. A man called Jem was lying in a drunken stupor beside the body and the murder weapon, an iron bar, is found near the scene of the crime.

'Jem is immediately accused of the crime, but floods prevent his being sent to an established court for trial.

'Coldringer, an old German opal prospector, suggests to the townsfolk that they set up their own court and have the trial in the town.

'The locals agree that the best way of ensuring that Jem is given a fair trial is to make Rigger, the father of the murdered man, defend Jem, and let the prosecution be handed by Kirk, who was Jem's employer.

'Neither Rigger nor Kirk is happy with the townsfolks' decision, but they eventually agree to accept the court arrangements.'

1 form y separately published work icon The Grey Nurse Said Nothing Sumner Locke Elliott , ( dir. Ron Winston ) Los Angeles : CBS , 1959 6463645 1959 single work film/TV crime thriller

Inspired by the unsolved 'Shark Arm case' in Sydney, Australia, in 1935, when a captured tiger shark regurgitated a tottooed human arm that proved to have been severed by a knife.

A contemporary review of this production in the New York Times reads:

'A drama based on an Australian murder trial provided a suspenseful telecast on "Playhouse 90" over Channle 2 last night.

'Sumner Locke Elliott's play, "The Grey Nurse Said Nothing," told by flashback narrative of a grisly murder trial that remained unsolved for thirteen years.

'The eventual solution of the crime of passion involved an unexpected development that gave the drama a diverting climax. A predominantly British cast gave uniformly good performances in this Fred Coe production, directed by Ronald Winston.

'The players included Hugh Griffith as a philosophical parson who told the story, Ann Todd an unhappy wife, Michael David, a murder suspect, Angela Lansbury, a teacher with the key to the crime, and Patricia Cutts, a friendly barmaid.'

The Herald Sun (published in Yonkers, New York) said of this episode:

'A tempting comic story by veteran Sumner Locke Elliott mixes farce with psychology. Giselle McKenzie has a whale of a role–in fact, four roles. She's alternately a simpering authoress, cold-as-ice career girl, lunatic gypsy violinist and ethereal singer. William Redfield is the hapless bachelor who falls in love with all four of her, and Evelyn Varden gets off a few clever quips as his mother. This is a "different" comedy from anything you've seen recently on TV, and the best yet from able new Studio One producer Gordon Duff.'
