BiographyHistory

Edward H. Sugden was educated at Woodhouse Grove boarding school and, in 1870, won a scholarship to Owens College, Manchester where he read for University of London degrees in arts and science. He then trained as a Wesleyan Methodist minister at Headingley Theological College, Leeds and served in two circuits in the Bradford area before being appointed master of the then new Queen's College at the University of Melbourne in 1887.

Sugden went on to hold the offices of president of the Victorian and Tasmanian conference of the Methodist Church and president general of the Methodist Church of Australasia. He was awarded a Doctor of Letters by the University of Melbourne in 1918 and retired from his position at Queens in 1928.
