Peter Polites’s second novel, The Pillars, with its themes of social and material advancement in Sydney’s western suburbs, captures this spirit of the time perfectly. Pano, the main character, studies people – those better off, more favoured, those who thrive and make it look easy – and wants a better life for himself. Tertiary educated and an avid observer, Pano has studied the habits, codes, dress, and attitudes that will disguise his second-generation Greek migrant status. — Appears in: Australian Book Review , June-July no. 392 2017; '‘Coming out’ stories remain one of the most potent sources for young people to understand their own relationship to sex, gender, and sexuality. Living in a largely heteronormative society, many young people find a place in these stories to validate and challenge their thoughts and experiences. Nevo Zisin’s memoir, written at the age of twenty, covers these areas but also speaks to those living outside sex and gender binaries. In recent years there has been a wealth of resources developed for people who resist such classification, and it has become a burgeoning and popular field in independent publishing. Zisin’s preferred pronouns are ‘they’, ‘them’, and ‘their’. It has been some time since ‘they’ has become the preferred singular pronoun in common English usage, yet many people are still surprised when someone adopts ‘they’ as a singular pronoun.' Screaming Hyena : E-Journal of Queer Writing and Review is an online magazine which covers lesbian, bisexual, transgender, gay, feminist, homosexual, queer, bent and sometimes straight contemporary literature. It contains book reviews and also publishes non-fiction and poetry. Founded in 1994, this journal went online in March 1998 following the last printed issue in December 1997. Writers range from full-time authors to amateur reviewers and come from all over Australia, North America and the United Kingdom.
