David Rain was educated at the University of Adelaide, South Australia, and graduated with a first class honours degree and a PhD in English Literature. From 1990 to 1998 he lectured in English at Queens University, Belfast, Northern Ireland, teaching mainly eighteenth and nineteenth century literature. Since 1998, he has been a freelance writer. He writes critical works, reviews, fiction and drama. Rain was a University of Brighton, UK, Fellow, 2001-2003.

Rain has also written short stories and articles for magazines such as the UK publication Interzone, and the British Fantasy Society magazine, Prism. He wrote a series of articles on the fantasy genre under the collective title Castle Dangerous, for Mark Chadbourn's At The World's End website and then later for The Alien Online.
