BiographyHistory

Edward Francis Hughes was born in England where he became an apprentice boy in a printing office. He published The Benighted Traveller: A Tale and Other Poems (1846) and a drama, Bernard: A Drama of the Year 1848 (1859) in London.

In Australia, Hughes published several volumes of poetry. He also founded the Portland Chronicle, editing it from its establishment in 1855, and was the proprietor of the Casterton News, Western Shires Advertiser and the Merino and Sandford Record.

Hughes sometimes used the pseudonym 'Frederic Gundash Shaw' for his writing.
