'Rolf Boldrewood was one of the best-known novelists of 19th-century Australia, and the first to present specifically Australian characters. Boldrewood's alter ego, Thomas Alexander Brown, was a pioneer squatter, civil servant and writer, with a career in many ways far grimmer than most of his fiction.' (Publication summary)
