Ian Irvine (Hobson) is an Australian fiction writer, poet/lyricist, nonfiction writer, editor and writing teacher living in central Victoria. The author of four books, his work has been published online and in print since the late 1990s. As an editor he co-edited seven editions of one of Australia’s first online literary/arts journals, The Animist (1998-2001). More recently he co-edited Scintillae 2012 (an anthology of writings by over 60 central Victorian writers) and Painted Words (twelve editions). He has taught writing and editing subjects at Bendigo Kangan Institute (1999-2016) and coordinated the program since 2003. His project, Songs of the Interstitium, attempts a transmedia exploration of tropes arising out of the New Sciences. Book 1, The City of Quartz (a novel), went on sale in 2016.

Along with Dr Sue King-Smith, he recently helped co-found the Zoetics Institute - an organisation promoting the role of 'fundamental creativity' in the lives of individuals and in society generally. In the 1990s he taught Sociology and Medieval History (alongside Australian author and historian Sara Douglass) at La Trobe University (Australia). He also taught various writing subjects at Victoria University (Melbourne) for three years and Psychology subjects at Bendigo TAFE for a decade (2000-10). Holding a PhD in Human Relations (gained 1998), he has published and presented extensively on a range of humanities and creative arts topics and his ‘Anti-manifesto for a Transpersonal Relational Poetics’ (with Sue King-Smith) has been popular internationally since 2008. In the early 1990s, Ian performed and co-wrote the lyrics to dozens of songs for '90s alternative rock outfit Goya’s Child.
