Frank Hives came to Australia in 1888 to work as a jackaroo on a cattle station in North Queensland. He then spent a number of years working in the Queensland bush, and together with his brother, later acquired several small cattle stations on the Herbert River. He married Bertha Georgina Pears, at Cairns in November 1898. Hives left Australia in ca. 1902-1905, and after joining the British colonial civil service, served in Nigeria for about two decades, initially as a District Officer, and subsequently as a Resident. His books Ju-Ju and Justice in Nigeria (1930) and Momo and I (1934) give accounts of his life in this period.
