J. R. Nethercote was on the staff of the Public Service Board and worked for the Royal Commission of Australian Government Administration. He has been secretary of various government committees and worked in the Institute of Public Administration Australia (IPAA). In December 2010 he was appointed adjunct professor with the Public Policy Instiute at the Australian Catholic University. Nethercote also edited journals including the Canberra Bulletin of Public Administration and the Australasian Parliamentary Review. He has authored, edited or co-edited works on Australian government and political history.
