Wallis Suchting was a Reader in the Department of General Philosophy at Sydney University. He graduated with a BA (First Class Honours) in philosophy at the University of Queensland in 1952, taught high school history for a number of years, and completed in 1961 a PhD in philosophy of science at Melbourne University. When still at Brisbane Grammar School, his poems and prose (which included criticisms) were published in The School Window (1947-1948). He was also selected to represent Queensland in a national colloquim of Australia's young intellectuals. Teaching himself Italian during the university holidays, he wrote an essay on The Divine Comedy and won first prize in the Australian Dante Alighieri Society competition. To further his studies he taught himself Latin, Greek, German, Russian, French and Spanish. He later published extensively, especially in his main fields of interest, namely, history of philosophy, philosophy of science, and Marxism. He was co-translator and co-editor of Hegel's Encyclopedia of Logic (Hackett Publishing Company, 1991). Other books include Marx: An Introduction (Harvester Press, 1983), and Marx and Philosophy (Macmillan, 1986).
