New Directions is known for uptaking unknown and often avant-garde writers in fine-press style. Nearly 20% of its output consists of foreign works in translation (DLB). In 1955 it started a line of quality paperbacks. New Directions was honoured in 1977 with a Carey Thomas Award special citation for distinguished publishing in poetry and experimental prose. Founder James Laughlin was the recipient of the American Academy and Institute Award for Distinguished Service to the Arts, the Annual P.E.N. Publisher Citation, and the National Arts Club Medal of Honor for Literature. Laughlin died in 1997. New Directions now publishes about 30 books annually in hardcover and paperback. Its name is synonymous with quality literature and quality publications. The company's offices are located in New York City.
