Growing up in Sydney, Winch divided his time between his Sydney home and his studio in Stuart Town, New South Wales. He is well known as a painter, printmaker, sculptor and ceramicist, as well as being an author and illustrator of children's books. Some of Winch's art works are included in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of NSW, the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris and the Guggenheim Museum, New York. He has had many national and international exhibitions of his work, which has received important awards over the years. He was also a May Gibbs Fellow in Children's Literature at the University of Canberra

Winch's favourite artists were Durer and da Vinci. His two final picture books, Run, Hare, Run and Fly, Kite, Fly, paid tribute to their influence. Winch also had a passion for classical music.
