BiographyHistory

Maria Teichel has published in Hungarian and English and has had her work performed in Hungarian. She began, but did not complete, studies in Philosophy at the University of Budapest, then later trained as a parliamentary stenographer. She began working in the Hungarian Film Studios as an editor in 1949 and, at the same time, became involved in amateur theatre and folk dancing. In Australia in 1974, she joined the Magyar Élet newspaper as a computer operator, journalist and sub-editor. She also joined the Hungarian Theatre of Melbourne as an actress/director and her two plays were staged by this theatre group under her direction. In 1987 she established the publishing company NM'SEDGA Publishing, which specialises in publishing the fiction of other Australian Hungarian writers. Her novel Sziget Utca 14 won the Árpád Academy's Literature Award in 1983.
