Zoltan Vindis was born in Nagykereki, Hungary, in 1916. He gained a degree in law and economics from the Franz Josef University of Kolozsvár (later renamed the Bolyai University of Cluj, Romania), and during World War II served as a first lieutenant in the Hungarian Army. Following arrival in Australia he worked for a number of years as a plumber and gasfitter. In 1980 his collection, Versem, az élet: Elso rész ('My Poetry is Life Itself : Book One'), won a bronze medal from the Árpád Academy, Hungary, and his Versem, az élet: Második rész ('My Poetry is Life Itself: Book Two'), won a later commendation from the same Academy. His work has also been read on community radio in Adelaide.
