BiographyHistory

A painter and cartoonist, Wolfgang Grässe was born in Dresden in 1930. He studied art in Italy, then returned home to the (then) German Democratic Republic. In 1948 Grässe was arrested by Soviet authorities for anti-Soviet cartoons. He spent eight years in prison. Once released, he resumed his artistic career in Europe, prior to moving to Australia in 1966. Grässe's fantastic realist works are in the tradition of Brueghel, Dürer and Grünewald.

Grässe worked as an illustrator for the The Bulletin. His stories for children have exotic settings that are reflected in his illustrations. He lived in Tasmania.
