BiographyHistory

Novelist Katharine King was the sister of Henry Edward King, who came to Australia in 1852 and served for a time as a MP for Maryborough on the Queensland Legislative Assembly and as Speaker, and was later leader-writer for the Brisbane Courier. She lived at one stage with her brother in Toowong, Brisbane. Her Lost for Gold was the only one of her novels set in Australia. It is possible that one or two of the novels written after this were begun while she was in Queensland.

Notes

  • The author's name appears in some sources as Katherine.
  • A note in Ethel Mildmay's Follies, 'by the author of Petite's Romance', led to the confusion of Katharine King with the author of Petite's Romance, 'M. J. M.' (Mary Jane Martin).
Another work by 'M. J. M.', Emily Graham (Ballarat, 1870) was written by M. J. Merson. This work has been erroneously attributed to Katherine King and W.M.James Mercer. Murphy has a note: "A slip in the copy sighted at SLV states 'presented by the Authoress, Mrs Merson, Sebastopol, Ballarat'.
