The Australian Jewish News is the only Jewish newspaper in Australia. It is published weekly with editions in Melbourne and Sydney. The paper started as The Hebrew Standard, which was established in 1895 in Sydney, and changed its name to the Australian Jewish Times in 1953. There was another name change in 1990 when it became the Australian Jewish News following the merger with the Melbourne-based Australian Jewish News. The history of the paper in Melbourne started in 1933 when businessman Leslie Rubinstein bought a two-year-old Yiddish paper Oistralier Leben (Australian Life) and launched an English edition called the Jewish Weekly News. In 1934 the Jewish Weekly News incorporated a fortnightly publication titled the Jewish Herald, but in 1935 the two papers separated and the Jewish Weekly News changed its name to the Australian Jewish News.
