1 1 y separately published work icon A Case for Literature: The Effectiveness of Subsidies to Australian Publishers, 1995-2005 Kath McLean , Louise Poland , Sydney : Australia Council for the Arts , 2010 Z1748021 2010 single work criticism This report presents the findings of a research project that examined the effectiveness, both critical and financial, of Literature Board subsidies to Australian publishers over the ten years 1995-2005. Individual interviews were conducted with eighteen prominent publishers and commissioning editors who were active in the period in Australian-based publishing companies. Detailed case studies were prepared of sixteen books that were assisted into publication by publishing subsidies. The case studies include titles in all literary genres - fiction, poetry, short fiction, non-fiction (including life writing and the essay) and the literary anthology. Some were significant as prizewinners, some as bestsellers; some were socially or culturally significant. The report offers a number of recommendations arising from the research.

— Appears in: Paper Empires : A History of the Book in Australia 1946-2005 2006; (p. 185-188) ‘Drusilla Modjeska's The Orchard (Pan Macmillan, 1994) is a collection of essay -like works that combine history, autobiography, mythology and fiction. It was first published in a small hardback format, and its design, as well as its content, attracted attention from the outset. Drusilla Modjeska has written a number of works concerned with women's experiences, including Exiles at Home: Australian Women Writers 1925-1945 (1981), Poppy (1990), a fictionalised biography of the author's mother, and Stravinsky's Lunch (1999), a study of two Australian women artists. She has also edited or co -edited several anthologies of essays and a collection of poems, and has been actively involved in feminist issues and debate. The Orchard was written with the assistance of a Literature Board fellow- ship and a residency at the Varuna Writers Centre. The book's creation was also assisted by publisher and editor Hilary McPhee. Modjeska first worked with McPhee on Poppy at Penguin, before working with her again on The Orchard. Modjeska had originally brought the novel to McPhee Gribble before McPhee moved to Pan Macmillan in 1992.’(Introduction 185)

The thesis argues, through historical examination of Australian government intervention since federation, that the role of government has been ambivalent, partly due to the essential commercial and cultural nature of the product: the book.

It applies a life-cycle model derived from histoire du livre scholarship to the contemporary Australian book. It employs this model to examine the inter-connected events in the book's life cycle - authorship, production, printing, distribution, sales, reception, use and preservation - in Australia, both in general and in terms of a single book (Drusilla Modjeska's The Orchard).
