BiographyHistory

The firm John Dicks was established in 1848 when printer John Thomas Dicks began publishing with popular writer G. W. M. Reynolds, whose writing initially provided the bulk of the material published. From the 1860s John Dicks published cheap reprints of novels, plays and classics, in series such as Dicks Penny Standard Plays, Dicks Shakespeare, Dicks English Classics, and Dicks English Novels. Ranging in price from one penny to a few shillings, John Dicks publications were characteristically in small print with three columns per page. The firm also published cheap periodicals, notably Reynold's Newspaper.

Renamed John Dicks Press, Limited in 1909, the company ceased publishing in 1929.
