1 3 y separately published work icon Burnt Sunshine Estelle Pinney , Camberwell : Viking , 2008 Z1462280 2008 single work novel romance 'Sydney, 1930, and Greta Osborne is a burgeoning stage star on the verge of joining the famous Palace Theatre in New York. But meeting British naval officer Andrew Flight at a New Year's Eve party changes everything. Falling in love at first sight, Greta waives aside any thoughts of sailing to New York and Andrew jumps ship. The pair flee to the tobacco town of Yunnabilla in Far North Queensland, where their relationship is viewed by the locals with pursed lips and raised eyebrows. The Great Depression brings added hardships, and circumstances push the couple further north to a remote island in Papua New Guinea where they face unexpected challenges. Burnt Sunshine is a heart-warming and very colourful novel about two people in love who take a big chance. In spite of a world depression, a near-tragic setback, disappointments, bad times that can turn into good times, together the pair manage to laugh and love and beat the odds.' 1 Writing in Brisbane during the Second World War : A Panel Discussion Val Vallis , Don Munro , Estelle Pinney , David Rowbotham , Patrick Buckridge (interviewer), 2000 single work autobiography
— Appears in: Queensland Review , October vol. 7 no. 2 2000; (p. 9-24)

'As far as the Queensland Studies Centre is concerned, this session follows on from a conference that we put on in Townsville at the beginning· of July this year at James Cook University as part of the Australia Remembers program. When John Collins asked if the Centre would be interested in organising a session of this kind on a similar topic, I jumped at the chance. It seemed like a great opportunity to explore a literature - and more broadly a cultural milieu, that of the Second World War, particularly in Brisbane - which I think we have forgotten about rather too soon, and perhaps have never found out about it in enough detail.' 1 War's End ... What Now? : The Second World War from a Woman's Point of View Estelle Pinney , 1996 single work essay
— Appears in: Queensland Review , April vol. 3 no. 1 1996; (p. 83-87)
'‘War's End’ must of necessity be linked with war's beginning and the years between. The exodus from North Queensland to the south (mainly Brisbane) after the fall of Singapore, and the transition from a rural environment to city living, offers a unique insight into war's effect and aftermath from a woman's point of view. This exodus south, which swelled the ranks of women in a burgeoning industrial and martial clime, wrought enormous social upheavals never before experienced in living memory.' (Extract)

'It's not everyday of the week that a girl from Muckadilla comes to Brisbane to join the Navy, but it's World War II and Lulla Riddel can see herself in those Navy whites. However, she promptly discovers that they can't use short-sighted strawberry blondes, so it's just as well the Brisbane Manpower Committee can...

'While lacquering hand grenades in a munitions factory is far from Lulla's dream, she soon meets the warm hearted Janet and practical Peggy on the factory floor. The three friends are young and ready for fun in the charged atmosphere of war-time Brisbane, where high adventure is only a tram-fare away. Servicemen are pouring into town, and the old rules don't apply - there's no time for courtships, but there's certainly time for romance. Lulla secretly prefers one infuriatingly cocky Australian sailor, but that won't stop her enjoying some of the other handsome young men in town...' (Publisher's blurb)
