Julitha Walker grew up on Mileura sheep station in Western Australia. After attending school at St Hilda's in Perth, she moved with her family to Sydney in the late 1940s where she began work as a cadet journalist with the Sydney Morning Herald. She then spent some time with the (then) Australian Broadcasting Commission recording traditional Aboriginal songs in the western Kimberley region.

Walker moved to Britain where she worked as a freelance journalist and introduced Indigenous Australian culture to an international audience. She returned to Australia in the late 1950s and worked in radio before leaving paid employment to concentrate on her home and family.
