On arrival in Australia, Hobart printer and publisher William Pratt worked for James Ross at the Hobart Town Courier. In 1840 he entered into partnership with Jabez Bunting and William Waterhouse who had purchased the printing business of Andrew Bent. After the dissolution of the partnership, he continued in business with his eldest son from 1851-1864. He was associated with the printing and/or publishing of several Tasmanian publications including the True Colonist, the Spectator, the Observer and the Daily News. Pratt was involved with the work of the Hobart City Mission and the Melville Street Methodist Church. (Miller, Pressmen and Governors, p.264)
