BiographyHistory

Departing war-torn China in 1945, Weiping Liu came to Australia and subsequently settled in Sydney where he held the position of Vice-Consul from 1945-1950. Following this period he then worked from 1950-1956 as a journalist for the Central Daily News (Taipei).

In 1956, Liu undertook his academic career at the University of Sydney where his involvement as a lecturer in Chinese Language and Literature 'allowed him to fulfil his own scholarly and literary interests'. During the following thirty years, Liu 'played a significant role in training the first generations of Australian scholars in Chinese studies'. He has also taken a major interest in reseaching the history of the Chinese community in Australia and the Oceania region.
