Annette Roberts was educated in Perth and after a brief career as a secretary in Australia and overseas, married and moved to her husband's family sheep and cattle property at Dandaragan in 1962. Influenced by the work of her great aunt, Ruth Lefroy, who lived and worked with Sister Kate at her Queen's Park children's home, Roberts developed an interest in Aboriginal affairs; in the 1970s this interest led to her working with the Community Welfare Department in Moora as a homemaker with women and girls of mixed descent and also running a play group for pre-schoolers at an Aboriginal reserve.

She has worked as an oral historian and also with the Ben Drayton Memorial Trust established to assist Aboriginal students to attend TAFE.
