An American poet and novelist who wrote about life in Greenwich Village and other areas of New York City. He was known as the King of the Greenwich Village Bohemian scene in New York and his writing achieved international fame during the jazz age of the 1920s. After his literary successes, he was hospitalised several times for drunkenness and vagrancy. Bodenheim was murdered with his third wife in 1954 by a sociopath they had both befriended on the streets of the village. His novel New York Madness was banned in Australia in 1934. Another of his novels, Replenishing Jessica (1925), was at the centre of a famous United States obscenity trial.
