BiographyHistory

Hugh H. Lusk was a Scotsman who migrated to New Zealand. He came to Australia with his son, Harold, in about 1890. Later he moved to USA, before eventually returning to New Zealand.

Under the pseudonym Owen Hall, he wrote magazine stories with Australian settings and two Australian novels, Eureka (1899), one of the earliest Australian science-fiction novels, and the convict novel The Track of a Storm. The other two novels he wrote as Owen Hall, Jetsam (1897) and Hernando (1902) do not have Australian content.

Under his own name, Lusk wrote books on social welfare in New Zealand and compiled History of Australia for Schools (Sydney, 1891).

  • Novels written under the pseudonym 'Owen Hall' have previously been incorrectly attributed to the British theatre critic James Davis (1853-1907) who, as Owen Hall, wrote librettos for musicals.
