BiographyHistory

A controversial figure in South Australia, Horace Dean came to Australia claiming to be a doctor. He became the first mayor of Angaston (named after George Fife Angas with whom Dean argued) and later mayor of Grafton.

Dean was also a newspaper publisher, journalist and politician in New South Wales. He wrote for the Empire and, 'in 1858 settled as a storekeeper at Tinonee on the Manning River ... In April 1865 he started the Manning River News.'
