McDonald argues that the constraints of local authority and the place of publication affected the historical accuracy of Quintus Servinton. The geography, chronology and protagonist's character all differ from the biography of Savery. But, because the protagonist's convict experience is not harsh, McDonald argues that pathos is only achieved after comparison with Savery's own tragic end.
