Author's note: In 1948, a foolhardy young London publisher had the fanciful notion of producing a volume of my poems. He went broke - or came to his senses - or something; anyway the book never materialised. But while it was still on the cards, Roy Campbell with the generosity which was characteristic of him, offered to write a preface even though, as is pretty obvious, his enthusiasm for my juvenile verses wasn't all that fervent.
His daughter, Anna Lyle, has authorised publication of this hitherto unknown piece of writing by the finest poet of our time. I think he would have been pleased that it should appear in Quadrant. A. K., Sury-en-Vaux, France.
