Robinson discusses the major biographical issues in relation to the interpretation of John Shaw Neilson's poetry and explores the major themes. Robinson argues that Shaw Neilson's unique stature as a rustic, self-educated genius and an accomplished writer of lyrics on the relationship between nature and the divine is best assessed in the restricted context of Australian writing, rather than through comparison with European writers.
