Epigraph in Fingerprints on Light: On 1 August 1785 two French frigates, the Boussole and the Astrolabe, set out from Brest on a voyage of discovery in the Pacific. The expedition was led by Jean-Francois Galaup, Comte de Laperouse. At Maouna Island in December 1787, twelve of his men were massacred by natives. Scurvy was rife.

(The expedition ended in shipwreck sometime in 1788. Neither ships nor men ever came back.)
