Notes

  • Author's note: To the Reader: This is fiction. No character in it represents any living person. As far as I know, there are no such islands as Malakaru and Halakai. I have projected the scenes at the Naval Base Headquarters and the Base Hospital in Brisbane without any committal to reality of those admirable institutions. The location of the prison camps I have made purposely as ambiguous as possible. On the other hand, the chapters dealing with the Pacific war of 1941-45 follow and respect actual historic events. Descriptions of Japanese prison camps were derived from official records and accounts given me by ex-P.O.W.s.
