An Exploration of Mary Gilmore’s Concept of Marriage Reflected in “Eve-Song” and Other Poems“

— Appears in: Australian Studies in China: Research on Australia by Chinese Scholars 2012; 'A highly-respected patriotic poet and political reformer in Australia, Mary Gilmore did not arouse the reader’s enough interest in and attention to her poetry on love and marriage. In order to have a comprehensive understanding of her poetry, this paper, from the perspective of ethical literary criticism, intends to explore the author’s concept of marriage reflected in some poems on this topic, with emphasis on “Eve-song” from the husband’s ethical chaos, the wife’s ethical dilemma and choice, discloses that a happy marriage is not only based on love, but responsibility and tolerance, and thus, calls the readers’ reflections on problems in relation to marriage ethics and the construction of a harmonious society.'
