The Oxford Companion to Australian Literature (1994) calls this 'a six-novel autobiographical series', however Sally Clarke's 2006 biography of Stuart, In the Space Behind His Eyes says 'he sometimes denied any autobiographic intent' but also insisted 'that he could only write about situations he knew and understood' (p.6).
