When Cranley Beverton returns to England after years spent wandering, he comes to the aid of a woman called Joan when her drunken chauffeur drives into a hedge. But this chance encounter puts him in the path of Dr Warling, a scientist who believes he has uncovered the 'Missing Clue'–the genetic key to allowing him to over-ride another person's free will and take control of them.
