Author note: ...comes from Papinian, which was performed in Adelaide in 1955. Papinian was the celebrated Roman lawyer who was executed in A.D. 212 for refusing to write a speech justifying the murder of his brother Geta by the Emperor Caracalla. This chorus occurs near the end of the play and is, in effect, a commentary on his choice from three different viewpoints: Christian (first slave), materialist (third slave) and Stoic (second slave).
