Author's note: Charles Meryon, the great French etcher, was the son of a Parisian dancer and and English doctor. As a young man, he served for three years as a junior officer at the abortive French attempt to colonize the South Island of New Zeland. He was stationed at Akaroa, where his mind was strongly affected by his experiences both at the colony, and on cruises about the Pacific..........(for the full author's note see page 18 of Poetry Australia no.17, August 1967)
