Packer examines the time spent in New Zealand by Henry Lawson in 1897 and the influence that the sojourn had on Lawson and his writing. Packer then jumps forward to the year 1980 when a double homicide occurred on the grounds of the land occupied by Lawson's New Zealand residence.
